Gallery: Narrative jewellery and adornments
Handcrafted jewellery and adornments are more than just decoration, they also hold personal, social and political meaning. Jack Cunningham ( 2014) reminds us that jewellery can also be a narrative art form and that , as objects jewellery and adornments can reflect and relate our stories (personal, political and social). The shape, colour, texture, and the materials that jewellery is made from (or references) , can trigger memories, hold emotional significance and communicate abstract ideas about a person's identity. Once the object is viewed by, passed to, worn or used by someone else, it takes on additional, new and changed meaning
Susan Cohn ( 2009) proposes that,
"Jewellery involves complex interactions between makers, objects, wearers and audiences within social networks. Possessing a distinct set of codes enlivened by its relationship to the body, jewellery is a way of thinking and connecting which is strongly embedded in the activities of managing identity that define cultures and epochs."
When worn, narrative adornments communicate a little something about the wearer to the world and in doing so help to connect us with others.
Lenni's narrative adornments explore stories and memories. They offer personal expression of her own identity and of the stories/memories of people she has connected with.
