A mourning brooch for Frodo's humans...
This particular work, Thief of hearts ( when you cry hold me, when things get too serious squeeze me) , plays with the idea of mourning jewellery, worn to commemorate the death of a loved one. Traditionally mourning jewellery contained the hair of a deceased person. In this oversized felt brooch, fragments of a fabric , dog collar that was once worn by Frodo, are incorporated onto the surface of the brooch. Fragments of photos of Frodo- focusing on his eyes , are incorporated into handstitched, Day of the dead like patterns and motifs. When I was afraid or upset Frodo would put his head on my lap and stare into my eyes until he made me smile. At the moment when Frodo left us , I was looking into his eyes and I saw his spirit leave.
The brooch is oversized , over the top and playful, emphasising qualities of Frodo the Airedale, and the abundance of love and joy that he brought into our lives. If you squeeze the brooch it squeaks- a reminder that memory and mourning is also a celebration of lives and spirits.
