- ( Apologies to Emily Dickinson...)
On the day, and at the time of my mother’s death… 9 July , 2019 , 8.30am...
I could not stop for Facebook, and Facebook did not kindly stop for me…
And that Facebook post holds not just himself,
but also Myrtle’s immortality
For the outpouring of his grief- he spared no haste…
9 July, 2019 , 10.30 am…
My mother’s passing still hovering on the edge of then and now
He updated a profile photo of he and she
With words that read
I always miss you Myrtle
Meanwhile my sister and I had put away our grief
Our mourning and our crying too
For the sake of Civility
Our first task to let Myrtle’s sisters and family know
That she had passed the setting sun
So that they did not find out
Second hand or publically.
While we were calling people who have spent
Their lifetime loving Myrtle
His friends… strangers to Myrtle
Were publically, quivering for him
A sanitised sorrow -digitally!
While those who had spent a lifetime loving and knowing Myrtle
Had not yet even cried their first tears of heart, felt grief or had time to process their loss
Myrtle was first turned toward Eternity
Not by Death and His carriage at a slow, mournful pace
But by a Facebook post for strangers,
To lament her passing in haste.
About this post: Some might know /remember that the focus of some of my craftivist and art work around memory, story and identity focuses on how social and digital media impacts and shapes our interactions with time/space/place/self and others..
I understand that grief and mourning is not an easy topic to navigate or for people to consider, or even talk about and that at a time of grief we process differently. This post is not meant as anything other than a personal reflection on the impact of social and digital media on our grieving and mourning: time, space, place, and process .
I am a descendent of slaves,
I am a descendent of Muslims,
I am a descendent of colonisers and slave traders,
I am a descendent of Christians.
I am a mixed up mash of things...
Lost and connected,
Belonging and rejected,
Conflated and conjected.
I am migrant...
Whirling through this fucked up mess,
This infectious disease of hate and fear,
In this country of advance,
This country of fair...
In this country of my citizenship,
For loyalty to the nationhood of dinkum- ridgey -didgedness
"She’ll be right mate"...
As long as she ain’t a she, but a he
“We want to see women rise....”
But only if “their overall place is maintained”
"She’ll be right mate",
As long as she ain’t a she, but a he,
With true-blue, white blood,
And a pocket full of queens earned by rite of passage,
Through the right class in the right private school,
With the right kind of religion and the right kind of mates,
Who whisper ...
“There’s golden soil and wealth for toil “
Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...
"For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share”...
Wink ,wink, nudge, nudge.
You say that you have cried on your knees over the plight of asylum seekers...
Declare ... declare
HIS universal love...Hallelujah
They say “asylum seekers are rapists, terrorists and paedophiles”...
Beware ... beware
They will steal your place in hospital queues,
They will steal your jobs, your homes, your souls,
And eat your children with halal vegemite, on toast, for breakfast....
I have been asylum seeker,
Standing on the edge of hope and the promise of a “ better” life in this land of sweeping plains...
I am migrant,
A descendent of strength,
A descendent of love,
A mash of integrity , hope and difference!
And I will not shout hallelujah to YOUR praise of hate and fear!
Is teamwork the same as collaboration?
When people are employed to work with a group, a team to achieve a common goal or outcome often each team member's actions are independent., even though they are all committed to the same result. Each member of a team , usually has a defined and specific job to do, to contribute to achievement of the goal, as a group.
Teams often rely on strong leadership and control or management of the work . Without this leadership and control teams often struggle and don't achieve "teamwork". Leaders in teams have a responsibility to ensure that each silo of each individual's responsibilities achieves the whole. Team members often deflect to leaders to solve whole of team issues and challenges, rather than creatively problem solve these issues, by being agile and stepping across and into roles and responsibilities, that are not assigned to them.
But is collaboration the same?
For me it isn't...
Collaborators not only work together, but to be effective they also have to think and problem solve together. Collaborators share in the responsibilities of the task and of each individual, rather than work as individuals, to achieve a common goal.
In collaboration, groups are often self-managed and they work beyond that kind of "your job- my job" thinking. Collaborators are agile, they flex and morph across tasks and work as needed to complete work. They step in and help individuals in the group when they can't complete work and problem solve without being assigned specific responsibilities to do so,
Leadership in collaboration is dependent on context and it shifts and changes and is shared by all members of the group, as necessary, to suit circumstances and needs of the shared goal and tasks.
My thoughts are that collaboration is a better approach to work towards more creative solutions and innovative outcomes.
What are your thoughts?
I said, “Darkness into darkness
All the carnage of my journeys
Makes it harder to be living"
He said, "It's a long road to be forgiven"
It's one more life

One minute she says
She's gone to get the cat in
The next thing I know
She's mumbling in Latin....
That’s how I know
She’s got a new spell
